How to Apply Hair Finishing Products Without Weighing Hair Down

You know when a hair product sounds brilliant, but somehow your hair ends up looking like it has had a very long week? Most of the time, the problem is not the product. It is how much went on and where it landed.

I use a simple little routine behind the chair. Start with less than you think you need, warm it between your palms, then work it through the mid-lengths and ends. Whatever is left on your hands can go lightly over the surface.

Start small

It is much easier to add a touch more than it is to undo half the bottle. Fine hair will usually need less than thick or very dry hair, so there is no magic amount that suits everyone.

Keep it off the roots unless the product says otherwise

Most finishing oils, creams and smoothing products are happiest through the mid-lengths and ends. That is where hair tends to need the extra polish. Putting too much near the roots can make freshly washed hair look flat far too quickly.

Use your hands properly

Rub the product between your palms first. This helps spread it more evenly, rather than leaving one very enthusiastic blob on a single section.

Check the finish in movement

Do not judge the result from one still photo. Move the hair and look at how it falls. You want softness and shine that still looks like hair, not a helmet.
